Husband with brain stem tumour

My husband has a brain stem tumour and has just finished 6weeks of radiotheraphy. He has had 1scan last week but theres no change to size and next scan is in a few weeks to see if tumour has shrunk at all! The docs have said if it dosent shrink they will try chemo as it couldnt be removed! Has anyone else had chemo as for tumour? Im unsure of how often he will have chemo or if its tablets etc as not really discussed it further yet,my husband is worried of side effects as he sruggled during radiotheraphy!
He sleeps most of the time and his moods vary,im told this is normal its so hard to deal with!
Any help or advice would be much appreciated!

Re: Husband with brain stem tumour

I am so, so sorry for what you are going through, and also that this first treatment was not as successful as you would have liked. My husband has a brain stem tumor (Grade III officially but could be Grade IV) - just diagnosed preliminarily end of July and confirmed with biopsy first week of August. We have gotten so much conflicting advice about treatment - first, we were told the tumor was inoperable so only radiation and/or chemo would work. Then, next doc said photon radiation at the same time as chemo would work and "cure" the tumor. Then we got another opinion that said that tumor was operable after all - sort of - 50 percent could be extracted and that without surgery radiation would not be effective and would merely stop growth but not shrink it which seems to be your experience. We are now going to circle back with the first doctor who said this was inoperable and get another opinion but I'm starting to feel as if we are spinning our wheels. One tip about chemo - ask if a methylation test can be done of the sample (if there's been a biopsy) - the methylation test can indicate whether the tumor is likely to respond to chemo. It won't make your husband feel less sick (there are anti nausea drugs too) - but it could help assess whether chemo will be worth it.

Re: Husband with brain stem tumour

Thankyou for your reply and sorry to hear of your husband,it really is frightning. We to have had conflicting advice given and it dosent fill me with confidence. My husband is currently in hospital following a seizure which after CT scan has revealed he has increased swelling and an infection, this is the 2nd time now since radiotheraphy has finished. We had a final scan beg of this month and go bk at end of month to find out results. Hes currently on anti sickness, and steroids.I will definey ask about the meth test as it sounds like it could be helpful.
How is your husbands symptoms and how are you coping?
Its such a daily struggle as you never know whats going to happen. I hope you get answers from your first doctor.
Thankyou
